"For the past 10 years, Senior Constable Ben Bjarnesen has lived by the statement that “domestic violence can affect anyone”. Within that time he’s been able to work through his personal domestic violence troubles, cultivate a LGBTI support group for multiple communities in regional Queensland, raise awareness for victims of LGBTI domestic abuse and most recently become the founder for LGBTI Domestic Violence Awareness Day."

The Premier’s Awards for Excellence acknowledges the exemplary work by individuals and teams across the Queensland public sector, and recognises the outstanding initiatives being developed and delivered for the benefit of all Queenslanders.

The LGBTI Support Networks “It Gets Better” Project was the winner of the Leadership Category and also received the Highly Commended Award for the overall Premier’s Award.

Top 50 most influential and inspiring
LGBTQI Australians

Cosmopolitan launched its first ever Pride issue, including a celebration of the 50 most influential and inspiring LGBTQI and allied Australians, in the inaugural Rainbow List.

A panel of six experts, including Labor’s Penny Wong and Prof. Kerryn Phelps, helped to single out the top 50 role models and those who have worked tirelessly for LGBTQI people to be treated equally.

Winston Churchill Memorial Trust
2016 Fellowship Recipient

The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust provides an opportunity for Australians to travel overseas to conduct research in their chosen field that is not readily available in Australia. It also aims to reward proven achievement of talented and deserving Australians with further opportunity in their pursuit of excellence for the enrichment of Australian society.

Ben visited six countries, seven police departments and 15 community support organisations conducting research with the aim of enhancing the response to domestic violence (DV) within the LGBTI communities.
